Supermoon - Eye treat for all stargazers

SHAH ALAM - Malaysians, feast your eyes on the supermoon while you still can!

The supermoon, also known as Strawberry Moon was seen clearly filling up the beautiful sky since about 7pm tonight.

The rare occurrence was reported to be only visible in certain parts of Asia, Europe, Africa and the United States.

This beautiful phenomenon caught the attention of Malaysians all over the nation, with social media platforms flooded by pictures of the moon which were captured by Malaysians from where they were located.

"This supermoon occurence happens once in a blue moon, definitely breath-taking view," said Charnan Murliah through his Facebook post today.

Meanwhile Leena posted in her Instagram saying that "My feed is filled with Supermoon vibes today! Eye treats to all stargazers”.

A supermoon is a term used by astrologers to describe the state of the full moon when the moon is in its closest position to the Earth (perigee),

Specifically, a supermoon can be a full moon or a new moon, where its distance from Earth is about 10 per cent or less from its orbit to the Earth.

When the phenomenon occurs, the moon looks bigger and brighter, even though the distance changes by only a few kilometers.

According to NASA, Strawberry Moon is the last full moon of Spring or the first full moon of Summer.

The National Planetarium's astronomical calendar had predicted that for 2022, the supermoon phenomenon would take place three to four times a year which are on June 14, July 14 and Aug 12.
