SEMPORNA - There are at least 41 unlicensed tour operators offering their services for tourists in the state.

Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the unlicensed operators should submit their license applications immediately to avoid any problems in the future.

"Register immediately to avoid any unwanted issues and don't risk the tourists for using unlicensed service.

"If any accidents were to happen especially at sea such as boats sinking, it will not only affect the tourists but authorities will also face problems with no records of the operator, boat and tourists," he said during a working visit here on Monday.

Also present was State Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Mohd Yusrie Abdullah and Semporna District Officer Juraimin Jadil.

He said the ministry only wanted to ensure that the tourists were protected and were offered transparent travel services.

"I am confident that the success or failure of a tourist destination depends on our ability to prepare a safe and secure environment for tourists.

"Meanwhile, an engagement session with the ministry and Semporna tour operators were also held to learn about the development and problems that they face," he said.

"This is including passing in terms of legal specifications and smooth travels according to the time set.

"We have rules and regulations that need to be obeyed, I am confident that a more united and cooperative action by all parties will solve all of the problems," he said.
