GEORGETOWN - The new chicken ceiling price of RM9.40 per kilogramme is "high" for the low-income group (B40), said Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) Education Officer NV Subbarow.

He said the lower-income group will feel the pinch as Malaysians continue to face economic uncertainties.

"Our survey found that the ceiling price set is too high. It will burden the low-income group," he said in a statement.

The new price starts from today.

Subbarow urged the authorities to ensure of no additional charges for cut chicken. "The ceiling price is RM9.40 per kilogram, with RM1 or RM2 of additional charges for cut pieces.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced an increase in the Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia (BKM) cash aid, in view of the removal of certain subsidies as well as the rising cost of goods.

Eligible B40 recipients will receive an additional RM100 per household while singles will get an extra RM50. Ismail said the government has allocated an additional RM630 million for this.
