KOTA KINABALU - Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili has said the "new" Malaysia Agreement to replace the 1963 agreement as "short-sighted" and "misguided".

The Parti Bersatu Sabah president further told Umno's second in command Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan that the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63) is the document that saw the birth of Malaysia and it is sacred.

"No MA63 means no Malaysia. Furthermore, the constitutional amendment passed unanimously by Parliament in December 2021 means MA63 is now part of the Federal Constitution.

"The suggestion for the new Malaysia Agreement by Tok Mat and supported by Sabah deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan is unreasonable, misguided and it would weaken Malaysia," he said.

He said it was shocking for any Malaysian to abandon MA63 for a new deal.

"Will the new agreement improve the original MA63 document or will it be ignored? Based on the limited explanation given on the new agreement, my thoughts are that it is wrong to abandon MA63," he said.

Ongkili further said abandoning MA63 means "cutting ties with the Federation of Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak at 1963.

Mohamad, commonly known as Tok Mat, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman had proposed a new Malaysia Agreement as a way to move forward in fulfilling the rights and demands of the state in MA63.
