Comedy club case: Couple pay RM40,000 bail with crowdfunding cash

KUALA LUMPUR - The woman charged with insulting Islam at a comedy club here and her partner who uploaded the video online have both posted bail, amounting to RM40,000.

The couple's lawyer R. Sivaraj said the bail has been posted which would see the release of Nuramira Abdullah, 26, and V Alexander Navin, 38.

He said that the money for the bail was raised through crowdfunding and it has since been posted at the Sessions Court, here, and in Petaling Jaya, where the pair were charged.

Nuramira is being held in Beranang and Alexander in Kuala Kubu Bharu.

Sivaraj, however, said he could not confirm when the couple would be released from the lock-up.

"I am not sure when they will be freed because I believe there are procedures that have been set by prison authorities before freeing them," he said when interviewed outside the Sessions Court here today.

On July 13, Siti Nuramira admitted not guilty in Sessions Court here based on the charges of causing disharmony among Muslims.

According to charges, the woman allegedly claimed to be a Muslim and had memorised 15 chapters of the Quran before removing her baju kurung on stage at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

Meanwhile in the Petaling Jaya, Selangor Sessions Court, Alexander Navin admitted not guilty of two charges for recording and uploading the video on Instagram and YouTube channel last month.

Following the incident, the woman was arrested in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya on July 9 and was remanded for three days while Alexander was arrested on July 10.
