LABUAN - The Jalur Gemilang can be seen fluttering in all corners of the duty-free island here as the local community prepares to welcome and celebrate the month of Independence.

Along the main roads leading to the city center, the Jalur Gemilang is displayed and hung on all the street lamp posts, showing that Labuan doesn't want to miss out on the launch of the Month of Independence and 'Fly The Jalur Gemilang' campaign.

Labuan Corporation chairman Senator Datuk Bashir Alias said 4,330 Jalur Gemilang have been affixed along all protocol roads, government premises and the Botanical Garden raising the total number of Jalur Gemilang already up and flying in the island to 7,180.

He also said some 1,350 Jalur Gemilang were handed out to 27 village heads to be distributed to the local community in all the 27 villages.

"Let us together show our patriotic spirit by waving the Jalur Gemilang in every residential premise, office or vehicle.

"The spirit of freedom needs to be cultivated by all levels of the society.. it is an inspiration in maintaining harmony, prosperity, and solidarity among the multiracial society, especially in Labuan," he told Bernama today.

In the meantime, Labuan Information Department director Ab Rasil Hajatil said a total of 1,500 Jalur Gemilang were handed over to six Malaysian Family communities.

"What we hope is the cooperation of community leaders to help the government create excitement in this once-a-year celebration.

"There is no denying that in the month of August, patriotism becomes an issue that is often a topic of conversation among the society.
