ALOR SETAR - Firefighters are reputed to be great cooks. It may sound cliche but eight firefighters from Selangor have been wowing visitors with their simple yet sumptuous dishes at the ongoing Kedah edition of the Keluarga Malaysia Aspirations (AKM) Tour.

These firefighters fondly referred to as ‘Abang Sado’ (muscular), have been showing their substantial cooking skills in the 'Fire Kitchen Abang Bomba' food truck at the Darul Aman Stadium compound.

They have been churning out delicious dishes such as fried noodles, fried kuey teow and fried bee hoon which are sold to visitors at only 50 sen per plate.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Senior Assistant Superintendent Shaharil Mohamad Hassan, who is also the chief coordinator of 'Fire Kitchen Abang Bomba', said the team has two cooks while the rest helped prepare raw materials in addition to operating the kitchen in the truck.

"We are no experts in cooking but we are used to cooking for the family at home, so we apply the knowledge to prepare the dishes,” he told Bernama here today.

He also said that firefighters involved have received a typhoid injection which allows them to handle food if they are involved in any programme or carnival.

He added that the sale proceeds will be handed over to Kedah JBPM as the host of the AKM Tour this time and the sale price of RM0.50 per plate is set to allow the public to have a taste of the dishes sold.

On the first day of the AKM Tour yesterday, more than 45 kilogrammes (kg) of cooked food were sold and what moved these firefighters was there were customers who were willing to queue in the rain for the dishes.

A visitor, Zuliaty Zulkiffli, 34, from Alor Setar, said she was initially surprised to see the long queue by the food truck before joining them with her friends to buy the dishes.

"Despite the very cheap price, the quality of the dish is maintained, the food tastes good and it's worth our long wait in the queue. In addition, we are also able to take pictures with the 'Abang Sado' firefighters as well as JBPM assets,” she said.

The three-day Kedah AKM tour at the Darul Aman Stadium compound here is the ninth edition after Johor, Perlis, Sabah, Terengganu, Perak, Kelantan, Sarawak and Selangor. - BERNAMA
