SHAH ALAM - As politics were mostly dominated by men, women should also be encouraged to be more active in politics.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Harun suggested to follow Germany’s way to encourage women in politics by funding their political party.

“In order to persuade political parties to have more women the government gives incentives to poltiical party that nominates women.

"We can take the European model like Germany for example where the political party is funded by the state.

“Of course the state cannot fund the whole political party but it can fund women nominations. For every nomination, she gets paid for every votes she brings in,” he said during an interview session Sinar Daily's Fireside Chat episode.

Azhar further added the women participation should consist of more than 10 per cent to qualify for the state fund.

He said the money could be used by the political parties to train and prepare women into politics.

Malaysia, he said has 14 per cent of women in Dewan Rakyat and 30 per cent in the Cabinet.
