SHAH ALAM - In politics, men just refuse to make way for women to be in power.

Project Fearless founder Nurul Ashiqin Shamsuri said it was frustrating that this was still an issue despite awareness and exposure over the matter.

She said although there were forums, summits and political assemblies being held on providing a 30 per cent quota for women in politics, no changes have been made.

“In every election, we keep on talking about this and we don’t see changes being made,” she said.

Nurul Ashiqin said this during Sinar Daily’s Relatable talk show entitled “Is 30% of Women Enough or Too Much?”.

The other panellists on the show were Sarawak Volunteers Exco Aeima Safina Zaidi and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Associate Professor Dr Ummu Atiyyah Ahmad Zakuan.

During the show, they discussed about whether there were conclusions and achievement of the 30 per cent women's participation in politics.

Nurul Ashiqin said men would not even think about giving women way to be in power if they had the chance.

However, she said with the current generation of men, things might be different as they would have a different perspective.

“Maybe this generation of men in power (would think differently), maybe millenial men are different, maybe Gen Z men are different.

“Or perhaps that's when we can see changes happen, maybe the different mindset there is empathy, there is more understanding of women's struggles,” she said.

By looking at how exposure was still on going, Nurul Ashiqin suggested to continue giving awareness and talk about the issue.
