GE15: Refrain from addressing sensitive issues, IGP says

KUALA LUMPUR – Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani warns all candidates for the 15th General Election (GE15_ not to address any issues that may disrupt public order when campaigning.

Acryl Sani said the issues involved were those related to religion, race and spreading false allegations that could disrupt public peace.

“There are views from observers who mention that GE15 campaigning and voting process will take place in a tense situation due to current developments.”

“I am confident that our society is more mature and knows how to distinguish between good and bad,” he said after he visited the candidate nomination centre at P121 Lembah Pantai at the Bukit Bandaraya Community Centre here, today.

He said the police, along with the Election Commission (EC) and other related agencies would conduct observations at all times to make sure that the campaigning and voting process would be carried out according to the existing laws.

“All parties should practice good ethics, obey the rules and not cause any disturbance and provocation that can raise tensions and disrupt public order when campaigning,” he said.

Acryl Sani said the police were prepared for any possibilities, in which as many as 79,953 officers and police personnel in the whole country had been mobilised for GE15 assignments.

“Police have arranged an operation codenamed Special Op Cantas to carry out intelligence, observation and take action towards the parties that try to cause disturbance,” he said.

Acryl Sani said the purpose of the operation was to regulate the behaviour and actions of any parties related to gangsterism that tried to take advantage during GE15.

“Police officers have also been assigned in the General Election Observers Team to ensure that all parties campaign according to the guidelines that have been set by the Elections Commission (EC),” he said.
