Don't sacrifice unity by instilling racial hatred, says DAP veteran

SHAH ALAM - Creating a rift among the society, especially among different races for the sake of winning the election should not be made as a strategy in going into the battlefield.

Former Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw said extreme game plan for the election such as inciting racial hatred among the society should be avoided as it will revoke the unity and harmony of the people in the country.

“You want unity, progress and harmony, then please do not go to extremes and try to incite racial hatred and religious unhappiness,” Tan said.

He was speaking as one of the panellists on Sinar Daily's Wacana English Edition programme entitled “GE15: The Young and New Changemakers” on Friday.

Commenting further, the DAP veteran said during his time in the political arena, he would try to avoid sensitive topics during campaigning.

This, he said was crucial for candidates who will be contesting in elections.

“When I campaigned, I did not touch on anything too sensitive, I always said if you vote for me, I will speak up for you.

“You want a representative, you want them to speak up for you in Parliament and state assembly whether it is a national or global issue, that's what you want them to do and when you are a candidate, you will try to do those things.

“If you love the country and the people, don't go to extreme,” Tan added.
