KUALA LUMPUR - The Igan parliamentary seat in Sarawak is the first to have its result officially confirmed by the Election Commission (EC) in the 15th general election (GE15) tonight.

The seat saw incumbent Ahmad Johnie Zawawi of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) defeating Andri Zulkarnaen Hamden of Pakatan Harapan (PH) by a majority of 14,662 votes in a straight fight.

Ahmad Johnie obtained 15,824 votes while Andri Zulkarnaen had 1,162 votes.

Voting centres for GE15 were opened from 8 am to 6 pm in Peninsula Malaysia while the voting process in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan began at 7.30 am until between 11 am and 5.30 pm.

Out of a total of 222 parliamentary seats, 220 were contested in GE15 today.

Voting for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat will be held separately following the death of PH candidate M. Karupaiya, who was also the incumbent, on Wednesday (Nov 16).

Meanwhile, the voting process at 11 polling centres for the Baram parliamentary seat in Sarawak was suspended due to bad weather, which resulted in its staff being unable to get to the centre.

Vote tallying for other parliamentary seats is continuing. - BERNAMA
