BUKIT MERTAJAM - While Pakatan Harapan Penang chairman Chow Kon Yeow described her defeat in her party and family's legacy seat as deplorable, it must have been heart-wrenching for Nurul Izzah Anwar to watch Permatang Pauh fall on her 42nd birthday.

But that was what happened as the PKR vice president and Pakatan Harapan candidate left supporters dumbfounded as she lost to Perikatan Nasional's Md Fawwaz Md Jan by a majority of 5,961 votes. Nurul Izzah garnered 27,753 votes to Md Fawwaz's 33,714.

Chow said that by losing the legacy seat of the People's Justice Party (PKR), PH's chances to win 11 seats it targeted in the state was also lost.

Apart from Permatang Pauh, PH also lost in Kepala Batas and Tasek Gelugor.

"We contested 13 parliamentary seats and aimed to win 11 seats. Along with Nurul Izzah's loss in Permatang Pauh, we also lost in Tasek Gelugor and Kepala Batas. There were flaws in our planning to achieve this target, but this was a decision that had already been made," said Chow in a press conference at the 15th General Election Results Monitoring Centre (GE15) here on Sunday.
