KUALA LUMPUR - After five stressful days, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared Oct 28 has a public holiday.

Anwar said this during his first press conference after being sworn-in as the country's premier this evening.

The crowd who were at Sungai Long Clubhouse to hear Anwar cheered as soon as the announcement was made.

“The ringgit has strengthened, so has Bursa Malaysia, so with this I want to announce that tomorrow will not be a public holiday, but a public holiday will be declared for Monday,” he said.

“I have told the chief secretary to the government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“Let us now focus on the economy and (do) whatever it takes to revive (it) so that the welfare of the people, particularly the poor and the marginalised, will be protected.”

Today after Anwar’s appoinment, it was reported that ringgit went up by 1.8 per cent to its highest in over two months against the US dollar.
