Pulau Gaya islanders in need of basic facilities and infrastructure

Most of the residents are eager to see Pulau Gaya to at least have proper facilities similar to what is available in the city of Kota Kinabalu.
The residents of Pulau Gaya have been pleading for the government for the area to be provided with clean water and electricity.
Pulau Gaya is located about 15 minutes from Kota Kinabalu.
The President of Pertubuhan Prihatin Rakyat sabah (PPRS) Datuk Mohd Fadli Fathullah said, among the problems faced by the islanders are the lack of basic facilities and infrastructure.
"Today PPRS had a second series of visits to Pulau Gaya and we took note of all the complaints and problems faced by the people in this area.
" Pulau Gaya is in need of electricity, clean water supplies, bridges for schools, and community halls," he told reporters during his visit to the island.
He said the government should take the initiative to help the people in the area as the issue has not been addressed for almost 30 years.
" They are currently about 5000 people living here and there is an urgent need to help them especially in terms of infrastructure and all this basic facilities
" So, through the PPRS initiative today, we have approved the funds to refurbish the jetty and it will be implemented in the near future," he said.
Apart from that, Mohd Fadli said the waste management in Pulau Gaya should also be given attention by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) especially involving the coastal areas of the island.
" We urge DBKK to take note of the rubbish and waste management especially on the coastline of Pulau Gaya," he said.
Mohd Fadli stressed that PPRS will continue to voice out all the problems faced by the residents of the island for immediate action.
"We hope that the State Assemblyman (ADUN) and the MPs in charge of this area take the problems of the people very seriously," he said.
Also present at the visit were his deputies, Sidnan Musi and Suhaimi Buang as well as Committee Members (AJK).
