KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 25 flood-prone hotspots have been identified by Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL).

Nonetheless, Kuala Lumpur Chief Police Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said the number of such hotspots might increase if flash floods occur.

“Flash floods could happen because of clogged drains,” he said during the press conference after attending a flood simulation programme at three locations, namely, Kampung Periuk, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Puteri Wilayah and Dewan Sultan Sulaiman here on Saturday.

Azmi said he hoped relevant agencies could upgrade basic infrastructures to deal with the flash floods in the city centre.

“We hope related agencies can cooperate to improve infrastructures like cleaning the blocked drains.

“If a flash flood happens, the police will also help to take quick actions to ensure the water flow is smooth on the flooded roads,” he said.

In another development, Azmi said the purpose of the simulation programme is to increase the knowledge, expertise and ability of each government agency regarding their roles and responsibilities in disaster management aspects.

“It includes the pre, during and post disaster elements such as sufficient knowledge and training so that rescue teams can coordinate their course of action during a disaster,” he said.
