KUALA LUMPUR - In honour of its 10th anniversary, secondhand marketplace in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Carousell Group, released the Carousell Recommerce Index (10th Anniversary Edition).

This is the specific environmental impact of the community's collective buying and selling of used goods.

With 46 per cent of Malaysian respondents to the poll admitting they purchase and sell used items on the group's platforms, Carousell Group stands out as a dominant player in the e-commerce market there.

To further highlight the effect, consider that if all of the used electronics listed were iPhone Xs, the height would be greater than 10,000 times that of Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers.

Millions of items, including 76.8 million fashion items, 33.9 million electronics, 26.6 million hobby, and toy items, 11.1 million furniture and home goods, and 10.6 million goods for infants and children, have had their life cycles extended by the group's users during the past ten years.

Key market trends were also covered in the report, with a focus on Mudah and Carousell Malaysia. They are:

The top 3 most popular categories to sell secondhand items are fashion, electronics, and cars, the top 3 most popular secondhand categories to browse are fashion, cars, hobbies, and toys, and the all-time top 3 most searched keywords for secondhand items: IKEA, BTS, and Nike.

Carousell Group co-founder Lucas Ngoo said this would help us to keep up with the changing trends in the country so that we can continue to drive e-commerce growth.

"This year’s report, which is also our 10th-anniversary edition, serves as a crucial guide to help us better understand consumer behavior in the post-Covid-19 era," he said.

"As a group founded on a mission to address the problem of overconsumption through technology, we are proud that our platforms have enabled millions of preloved and underused items over the years to find new homes and purposes, thus reducing waste to protect our environment while providing value to buyers and side income to sellers.

"We endeavor to continue with this mission to promote a sustainable and circular economy in Malaysia," he added.
