SEREMBAN - The Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) has advised the public to be careful and check before purchasing any decorative items containing calligraphy of Quranic verses.

JHEAINS Enforcement Division Operations Unit chief Ahmad Zaki Hamzah said this was because several premises around Nilai near here were found to be selling such items with imperfect verses, which raised concern among the Muslim community.

"It is easy to place the responsibility on enforcement agencies, but the community is actually responsible for choosing any decorative items containing the Quranic verses that are true and accurate in accordance with the rules and the Syariah.

"This is because a small mistake in a verse of the Quran carries a different meaning, that's why there can't be even the slightest mistake, there has to be zero defect in the verse. This matter is very sensitive, the public may also be confused and misled if it is used incorrectly," he told Bernama today.

Therefore, he said traders should stop the sale of such defective items and check and obtain approval from the authorities under the Al-Quran Text Publishing Act 1986.

Ahmad Zaki said any trader who did not abide by the rules would be subject to action, while the items in question would be confiscated by the authorities.

Meanwhile, he said the owners of three premises where checks were conducted yesterday gave the excuse that they did not know there was a mistake in the verse and that it was only a minor one, but this should not have happened, as they were Muslims themselves.

"They (traders) take this matter for granted even though the verses of the Quran are very sensitive for Muslims, that's why there have been cases of disposing of various decorative items containing the holy verses of the Quran before. It actually involves the faith and belief of Muslims, so anything related to it must be correct," he said.

JHEAINS previously found a pile of decorative items containing verses from the Quran on the side of the road in the Arab-Malaysian Industrial Park in Nilai near here, believed to have been disposed of by furniture dealers from the Nilai 3 Industrial Area.

Ahmad Zaki said JHEAINS along with other enforcement agencies such as the local authorities and the Seremban City Council continuously monitor business premises in the state and raise awareness among traders and consumers.

"There are many shops here selling such items, therefore we urge consumers to help out each other. If we don't buy it, then the matter will not get out of hand. As for traders, do not think that you have been overlooked because we are always monitoring," he said.

He added that those with information on the matter could pass it on to JHEAINS or other enforcement agencies including the police and local authorities.
