PUTRAJAYA - Projects below RM50 million in value, will be handed over almost entirely to Sabah and Sarawak to manage, effective immediately.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was agreed upon by the Finance Ministry in line with the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63).

"The implementation (of the projects) must follow the regulations and financial guidelines," he said in a press conference after chairing the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

He said the process of finalising the project implementation decisions in these states was previously seen as time-consuming due to the need to go through the Federal Government.

"The decision could be made in Kuching or Kota Kinabalu without being delayed following the old regulations," he said.

He said there were several matters that were delayed previously. For example, the decision to expedite the implementation of some projects was made in Putrajaya, even though there are Public Works Departments (JKR) in Sabah and Sarawak.

"Even though a large allocation is given, the allocation cannot be fulfilled because the administration followed the normal regulations and was forced to refer to the federal government," he explained.

Anwar stated that the Sabah state assembly will finalise the regulation of gas supply next month.

"The question of the gas regulatory authority in Sarawak has been decided, it will be finalised in Sabah," he explained.

Anwar previously said the unity government decided to transfer the power to regulate gas supply to the Sabah government, as it was previously managed by Sarawak.

The power to set prices and new agreements related to gas regulations that were previously decided at the federal level now rests entirely with these two states.
