SHAH ALAM - The government must find a solution to ensure that food sold at the school canteen are affordable

Malaysia Bersatu Information Chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said this was to ensure that parents were not burdened by the rising cost of living.

" Complaints from parents have been coming in since the beginning of this year school sessions, however the ministry responsible has yet to issue a statement.

" This just another example of the incompetency of the PH-BN government in caring for the people and it seems like the fail to understand the difficulties of what the people are facing, " he said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Saiful was commenting on the issue of the 50 per cent increase in school canteen food prices due to the rise in prices for raw ingredients.

He said he was in the midst of gathering thorough feedback from parents regarding the price of school canteen foods in schools around Tasek Gelugor.

“Based on media reports on the general situation around the country, the School Canteen Employers Association reports that the price of roti canai had risen to RM1.50 compared to RM1 last year, fried chicken is now priced at RM2 to compared to RM 1.50 and the price of nasi lemak had risen to RM1.50 compared to RM1.

“The cause for the increase in price for the foods is due to the price hike of raw ingredients in the market coupled with the difficulty to get supplies such as eggs, sugar and cooking oil. Where are the solutions that were apparently going to take two weeks?” he wrote

The Tasik Gelugor MP said instead of focusing on this urgent matter, the Education ministry was just busy following Rafizi Ramli's teachings that students need to eat less at the canteen because of the higher food prices.

“The government must find a solution with the canteen operators. The PH-BN Education Ministry should have met them immediately to discuss ways to solve it and reach an agreement.

“This includes perhaps considering providing a moratorium for rent or subsidies for the operating costs for canteen operators who were mostly small bumiputera entrepreneurs.

“As the government you should help the people. Not busy scrambling for power and fighting among one another,” he said.
