KUALA LUMPUR: Move to ensure the Umno President and Deputy President remains uncontested is best for the party and country’s political landscape.

Pahang Menteri Besar and state Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail told Sinar Daily that he agreed with the delegates’ voice to pass the motion not to contest for the top two posts.

“This decision will provide a more stable political landscape for the country.

“History has proven that disunity will occur whenever there’s competition,” he said during the 2022 Umno General Assembly.

Wan Rosdy highlighted the tensions between former president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Umno veteran Tengku Razali Hamzah back in 1980s.

Earlier, the delegates voted for the contentious supplementary motion – tabled at the eleventh hour by its Negeri Sembilan delegate – which proposed for the top two party posts to not be opened for contest.

Apart from Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the passing of the motion also meant that deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan would retain his post.

The passing of the motion was announced by Terengganu Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) here today.

Zahid had expressed his utmost gratitude to Umno delegates for their decision to allow him to continue reigning as the party president for another term.

Umno is set to hold its party election soon, latest by May this year.
