SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim appointing his daughter Nurul Izzah as the Senior Economic and Financial Advisor brings a negative perception to the government as it is viewed as nepotism.

National Professors Council (MPN) Governance, Legislation and Management Cluster chief Professor Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmood said the action was inappropriate with the rakyat criticising Putrajaya over the appointment.

He said as an experienced leader Anwar should realise the impact of his decision.

"Even if a person qualifies, there are issues (family ties) that can cause issues in a government," he told Sinar.

Kamal said Anwar had the choice to avoid negative perceptions by ensuring the policies set were made transparently.

"The prime minister must ensure the economic policy involving Nurul Izzah is transparent, meaning each decision is made through the Cabinet," he added.

Kamal further said even if Nurul Izzah was qualified, it was 'inappropriate' to do so.

Nurul Izzah confirmed that her appointment had been effective since Jan 3.
