ALOR SETAR - Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor describes Nurul Izzah Anwar's appointment as the Senior Economic and Financial Advisor to the prime minister as unusual.

He said this was not something that has been done by any other Prime Minister before.

He said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's decision to appoint Izzah seems like a sign that any family members are allowed to be given unpaid positions in the government.

Sanusi said according to his research he has never found any positions where an individual performed work on behalf of the government without a salary or payment considering that it is related to several issues including the remuneration scheme.

Sanusi said such assignments or positions only exist in non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

He jokingly stated that this appointment is the true definition of the Madani Malaysia concept introduced by the prime minister.

"I have researched regarding appointments in the Finance Ministry, there is no such postings in the government that is without a salary as each services has its payment.

"It has never been done before, it's unusual, maybe Anwar wanted to set a benchmark for politicians not to award a salary for their children, this is the madani concept within the families ," Sanusi jokingly said when met after the 2023 Kedah State Level Chinese New Year Ceremony at Seri Mentaloon Hall, here, on Tuesday.

It was reported on Tuesday that Anwar was open to receiving criticisms and will give an explanation on why he appointed his daughter.

He stated the appointment was without pay as he wanted Nurul Izzah to play a role in aiding the government, ensuring transparency of the administration as well as making sure that the procurement of government tenders would be done according to procedure and in an orderly manner.

Anwar questioned those who criticised him as they were not practicing a transparent administration by awarding contracts and tenders worth millions to their own family members. - AWANI
