PUTRAJAYA - The Education Ministry (MoE) is investigating claims that a teacher had encouraged a Form Three student in Kuala Lumpur to convert to Islam to boost their chances of becoming professional footballers.

In a statement today, the Ministry said it was ready to cooperate with the police if needed.

The Ministry had received initial reports from the Kuala Lumpur Education Department regarding the claim that was broadcasted in a recorded press conference on Wednesday.

"The ministry view this issue seriously and stress that religious matters should not be used as jokes," the ministry said.

Accordingly, further investigation and appropriate action will be taken against any party found committing the act.

"The ministry will not compromise on matters involving the school management, especially issues that can threaten racial and religious harmony.

Earlier, a portal reported that a mother of a student claimed a teacher had encouraged her son to embrace Islam to increase chances of advancing the student's football career.

The mother, known as Vasan, also claimed that the teacher even suggested an Islamic name for her child and had been talking about it for the past six months.

This incident also gained criticism from former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman who said that "sport is for everyone"
