KUALA LUMPUR - Police have opened an investigation paper after 13 copies of Quran were believed deliberately thrown into a drain at Taman Sri Murni, Jinjang.

On Sunday, a one minute and 39 second clip showing several copies of Quran in the drain had gone viral on social media.

Sentul District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Beh Eng Lai said the case was investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for destroying sacred items like the Quran with aim to insult the religion.

The case was also investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for disturbing religious harmony.

He said a 52-year-old local woman lodged a police report about the incident at 11.32am on Sunday.

"She found several copies of Quran in the drain when she was exercising with her husband at the lake on Saturday around 6.30pm.

"The complainant saw a blue bag in the drain near the lake reservoir.

"The complainant then found copies of Quran in the bag," he said in a statement today.

He said the complainant asked the public's to carry the bag out of the drain.

"All the copies were sent to Masjid Annas Kampung Selayang Lama for safekeeping before it was handed over to the police for further investigation.

He said Kuala Lumpur cops have advised all members of the public to not make any speculation that may cause concern and affect the public order.
