KUALA LUMPUR : The immigration department's automatic screening gates at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) will now be available for foreign nationals from low-risk countries

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the move was to reduce congestion at the Immigration counters

According to him, previously the use of automatic doors was only available for Malaysian citizens.

"I aware of the congestion problems at the entrance gate to our country and we are trying to take the steps to overcome the matter.

"This evening I will make the official announcement for the auto gate which will be available for foreign nationals from countries such as Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand or neighboring countries," he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

He said this in response to an additional question from Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) who wanted to know what measures the government has implemented to overcome the problem of congestion at the KLIA Immigration counters, where sometimes it takes up to 3 hours for clearance.

Saifuddin explained that the peak arrival time for international flights is currently between 3pm and 11pm with a frequency of every three to four minutes.

"This is why the clearance process at the Immigration counter can be time consuming

"We are ready to plan efforts to relieve the congestion because it is seasonal...especially now that it is the school holiday season," he added.
