Father and daughter suffer burns due to sparks from a waste incinerator

KUALA TERENGGANU - Batik artisan Mohd Mujaddidi Mohd Noor, 34, has been unable to work due to a burn related injury, and is worried about his family's needs, especially his children's back to school expenses.

Mujaddidi who hails from Kampung Gelugor Haji Tahir, here, had suffered burns on his arms after he was hit by sparks from a waste incinerator last Friday.

The unfortunate incident which happened at about 5pm in Kampung Pengadang Baru also injured his two-year-old daughter Nur Aisha Mawaddah.

"My wife (Nurul Asma Muda,31) and family just happened to come to my brother-in-law's house to help prepare for an event there.

"My wife helped to cook and there was a waste incinerator nearby. Suddenly there was an explosion with sparks as the rubbish collected was burning.

"I was nearby, and immediately turned to protect my daughter who was on my lap, causing the sparks to hit the left side of my body and my daughter's face. Perhaps she had turned to look at the flames," he said when contacted by Sinar, here, on Monday.

Mohd Mujaddidi said he immediately drove to the hospital after the incident and had to bear the pain of the burns during the whole 15-minute drive.

"I was still shocked and worried about my daughter's injury on her face. I turned on the lights and drove in the emergency lane.

"Fortunately, we arrived safely. We were immediately rushed to the emergency unit and was placed in the 'red zone' before receiving treatment," he said,

Both father and daughter are being treated at the Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ).

He said the burn wound on his hand will take some time to heal and he had to rest because he could not work with the injury.

Other than his arm, his neck, ear and left side of the face were also injured.

"The doctor will first look at my arm's condition and they might have to graft another skin from other parts of my body to the injury because the injury is quite deep.

"I'm stuck thinking about the cost of treatment that we need to bear in addition to school preparation expenses for the next school session. I am worried about the expenses to come considering my wife is not working," the father of three children aged eight, six and two said.

Mohd Mujaddidi said he was paid every two weeks for his work as a batik artisan, depending on the amount of batik that is completed.
