PUTRAJAYA - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been detained today.

In a statement, MACC said Muhyiddin had been detained during an investigation of alleged corruption in connection with the Jana Wibawa scandal and the former government's spending in relation to the Covid-19 stimulus package.

The Perikatanan Nasional chairman will also be charged tomorrow (March 10) for several charges under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. He will also be charged under Section 4(1)b of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA).

Earlier, Muhyiddin was summoned by the commission to have his statement recorded over the Jana Wibawa scandal and the stimulus package funds spent during the period in relation to the Covid-19 management.

The Jana Wibawa scheme was introduced by the government under Muhyiddin's administration to speed up project implementation and boost the country's economy during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The scheme was also intended to increase the capacity of Bumiputera/Malay contractors in the construction industry to be more competitive and resilient.

Muhyiddin had arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 11.20am.

Hundreds of supporters had been gathering outside of the MACC building since 7am to support the former prime minister.
