WASHINGTON DC, US - Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has given an "A" for the Unity Government’s performance thus far, citing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has “achieved more than the other prime ministers have in the first 100 days”.

He said there were many things can be discussed about the things Anwar has done but the number one move had to be the fight against corruption.

“It is disgusting. It is diplorable for a person, a politician who has reached the highest peak they can in their political life to abuse the confidence and support of the rakyat that has given to them.

“They stole it from the people, the money for Covid healthcare, the money for vaccinations. We are talking about a sickness here.

“It is shameful and if they are found to be true, this people should be punished,” he told Sinar Daily in an exclusive interview.

Nazri said the crackdown on corruption in Malaysia will only make it easier for him as ambassador and as the forefront of Malaysian foreign relations.

When questions rise about corruption and abuse of power, he said can proudly say the government and authorities were taking action.

“There is no more covering up or anything of such (on corruption in Malaysia).

“It is an A for them (Unity Government). Happy with what they are doing and happy with the fight against corruption,” he said.

When asked if there was any specific political figure he was referring to, Nazri did not mention any names but said "Siapa makan cili, dia rasa pedas" (who eats the chilli will feel hot).

Last week, former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was charged with abuse of power and money laundering in connection with the awarding of government contracts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He faces four counts of abuse of power involving RM232.5 million and two counts of money laundering involving RM195 million.

Muhyiddin, who led the country from March 2020 to August 2021, pleaded not guilty to the six charges at a Kuala Lumpur court on Friday morning (March 10). He rejects the allegations, which his supporters say were politically driven.

Nazri was the de facto Law Minister when the Malaysin Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 was enforced, stating that he was always adamant it be utilised to its full force.

On Anwar’s premiership, the former Padang Rengas Parliamentarian said he had always supported Anwar to be prime minister even back in his days in Umno.

“I worked with in the caucus and supported him in Parliament. I am not trying to be bias here but he has achieved more than the other prime ministers have in the first 100 days”.

Prior to becoming the ambassador, Nazri was the Padang Rengas MP for four terms and two-term MP for Chenderoh.

Aside from his role as de facto Law Minister, Nazri was most famous for his role as Tourism and Culture Minister under imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from 2013 to 2018, who was found guilty of corruption charges linked to state wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) last year.
