General insurance industry supports digitalisation of road tax, driving licence

KUALA LUMPUR - The general insurance industry supports the digitalisation of road tax and driving licence by the Road Transport Department (RTD), believing that the initiative would result in more efficient enforcement by the authorities, including the Royal Malaysian Police.

According to the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM), one of the primary benefits of the initiative is the reduction of paper waste as vehicle owners would no longer have to use road tax stickers for display purposes.

"On top of that, digitalisation is cost-effective as it reduces the need for the road tax to be delivered, thus, eliminating any delivery charges,” it said in a statement today.

Additionally, it said drivers can travel without worrying about having their physical license with them as they are no longer required to carry it.

"Overall, the initiative would benefit both the general public and the environment,” said PIAM.

Last month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that starting Feb 10, 2023, private vehicle owners will no longer need to display their road tax sticker on their windscreen or carry a physical copy of their driving licence.

He said the digital version of the two documents are available on the RTD’s public portal (https://public.jpj.gov.my) or mobile application, MyJPJ, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or the Huawei App Gallery. - BERNAMA
