KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 14 local heritage craft products from various ethnicities will be featured at London Craft Week (LCW) from May 6 to 14.

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah who leads the exhibition said, the products were Telepuk Terengganu (a textile-decorating technique) and Songket Terengganu; weaving products by the Semelai people from Pahang (Anyaman Pandakan), Anyaman Tikar and Anyaman Ribu-Ribu from Sabah.

Sarawak weaving crafts will also be highlighted, including Anyaman Bergerang, Ikat Iban Sarawak, Anyaman Penan and embroidery (Keringkam Sarawak), in addition to the Mah Meri weaving heritage (Anyaman Pandan) and ancestrial sculptures from Selangor.

"Last year we participated in LCW by promoting the heritage textiles of the Pahang Royal Weave and it was quite successful when it attracted 3,000 visitors including fashion designers.

"Following the good response, this time we decided to feature local heritage craft products because most of the products were made by the older generation and will disappear if not revived," Her Majesty said in a press conference at Istana Negara today.

The Queen, who is also the patron of the Royal Pahang Weaving Foundation said seven craft entrepreneurs would also be flown to attend the exhibition to give demonstrations on the making of the crafts, including Shirley Vilin, Helena David and Samri Abdul Rahman who will demonstrate the making of Ikat Iban Sarawak, Sulam Manik and ancestral carving respectively.

Themed ‘Malaysia’s Heritage Crafts’, she said the exhibition would also feature interactive workshops in craft making, adding that it is expected to attract 5,000 visitors.

"In addition to opening up market opportunities for craft entrepreneurs to collaborate with international designers and renowned malls and galleries, we hope that it can tell the life story of every ethnic group in Malaysia through the craft language," Her Majesty said - BERNAMA
