SHAH ALAM - DAP MP Chow Yu Hui has expressed shock over the relentless attacks by MCA leaders on Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying, urging them to stop behaving like the opposition.

Chow said the deputy Speaker unexpectedly extended the oral question and answer time in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, allowing Pengkalan Chepa MP Ahmad Marzuk from Pas to ask the 16th question on the list.

“This unprecedented allowance led to Lim being unprepared to answer the question and drawing heavy criticism from Perikatan Nasional (PN),” said the Raub MP.

"It was expected that PN would take advantage of the situation, but surprisingly, MCA, a member of the government, launched an all-out attack on Lim Hui Ying," she said in a statement today.

The charge, she said was led by MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon and national youth secretary-general Daniel Wa Wai and "their firepower even surpassed that of PN."

Chow emphasised that Lim immediately apologised and promised not to repeat the mistake after being reprimanded by the deputy Speaker.

Lim 's aide, Lim Swee Kuan also apologised for the oversight and the team acknowledged their shortcomings and promised not to repeat them.

"No one is perfect. Knowing one's mistakes and correcting them is the greatest virtue. As a first-time deputy minister, there are many parliamentary procedures and rules to familiarise with," she said, adding that Lim’s team should be given a second chance.

Chow also criticised Mah for seizing every opportunity to attack Lim and insinuating that her oversight was due to her presence in a constituency event the previous night.

"If Mah wants to make his presence felt, he can choose to counter PN's extremist remarks on the Jom Ziarah programme or comments by Bersatu Women’s Chief, Rina Harun on closing down vernacular schools, rather than relentlessly attacking DAP,” she said.

Chow urged MCA leaders to remember that they are part of the government and they should not follow PN's rhetoric, attacking Lim, slandering, and smearing DAP unrelentingly.
