NEW DELHI - Renowned Indian Islamic scholar Maulana Syed Muhammad Rabey Hasani Nadwi passed away aged 93 in Lucknow city on Thursday.

He served as president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), an umbrella body of scholars and organisations, and headed the famous Islamic university Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow - about 530 kilometres from New Delhi.

He was suffering from age-related ailments, but his condition worsened in the last few days.

"We request everyone to pray for his maghfirah (absolution)," the AIMPLB said while announcing his death.

Maulana Rabey authored dozens of books in Arabic and Urdu and was held in high esteem in the Muslim world for his erudition.

One of his most read books is Rahbar-e-Insaniyat, a biography of the Prophet Muhammad.

"Maulana Rabey was the greatest surviving Muslim personality in India. He was a consensus builder on theological matters and his views were widely respected," noted intellectual Zafarul Islam Khan said.

Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati were among the prominent politicians who offered their condolences on the maulana's demise.

"A well-known Islamic scholar, his contributions to the advancement of education shall always be remembered," Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a tweet.
