KABUL - The people of Afghanistan celebrated Eid al-Fitr and offered Eid prayer amid tight security to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan on Friday.

No security incident has been reported, and security forces personnel have been deployed around mosques and sensitive areas elsewhere in the war-torn country to thwart possible security threats.

"The security situation is good, and I am hopeful that the people of Afghanistan could celebrate the three-day Eid holidays in a peaceful environment," a Kabul resident Fahim told Xinhua after offering Eid prayers at a local mosque here.

Prayer leaders in their sermons, besides praying for durable peace and security in their war-torn and economically impoverished homeland, have also urged the establishment to create job opportunities to reduce poverty in Afghanistan.

Acting Interior Minister Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, in his message on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, assured his countrymen that police personnel would spare no effort to ensure peace and security during Eid al-Fitr's three-day holidays starting from Friday - BERNAMA
