TAWAU - Two individuals were arrested after they bought fast food using an automated teller machine (ATM) card which belongs to someone else, two days ago.

Tawau district police chief Superintendent Champin Piuh said a police report was lodged by the owner of the ATM card after realising it went missing before finding out that a total RM1,160 had been used from the account without the victim’s knowledge.

“The victim only realised the card was lost around 8.10pm on Tuesday at a petrol station in Bandar Sri Indah and after checking the bank account, money had been used without the victim’s knowledge.

“Investigation found that a 19-year-old woman had bought food from a fast food restaurant around 8pm using the ATM card through the "PayWave" method and the victim received a short messaging system (SMS) text stating that there was a charge to the card at the restaurant,” he told Sinar, today.

He said after receiving the SMS, the victim gave the information to the police before an arrest was made at the restaurant.

“Arrest was made on the woman and a 24-year old man who is the brother of the woman’s fiancé who had used the ATM card.

“Both suspects were remanded for four days starting Wednesday to assist investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997,” he said.
