Tiger terror: Atleast 20 cows missing
SUNGAI SIPUT - At least 20 cows were believed to have been killed by a tiger in the area around Bukit Berekeh and Lasah last month.
Mohd Hazwan Ramli, 35, who manages a cow farm in Ladang Perlop 3, Lasah, said cows were noticed to be missing after several carcasses and n-bones were discovered along with tiger tracks around the pen area.
"For the past month, I have found one of my cows missing, totaling 20 now. After searching for the missing animals, only bones and carcasses could be found.
"Yesterday (Sunday), the same animal attempted to catch one of my cows, but it was unsuccessful. The cow was injured, with a bite mark on its leg.
"I had my suspicions that a tiger was behind their disappearances because I saw the animal’s footprints around the area," he told reporters here on Monday.
Hazwan said this was the first time he had been faced with such incidents since managing the cows and buffaloes in the area for the last 15 years.
He said the presence of the tiger is threatening the livestock, as some of the cattle no longer wanted to return to their pens and would roam around the native villages nearby.
"A report has been made to the Perak Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (Perhilitan), and they have informed that traps will be set.
"I hope these efforts will be successful, as we are worried about our safety and feel threatened if the tiger is not caught," he said.
On May 5, Sinar reported that Perak Perhilitan confirmed the presence of tigers in Bukit Berekeh.
Several pictures of tiger prints were found by hikers around 4am and they had gone viral on social media.
