Kedah plans to dissolve state assembly on June 28 - Sanusi

ALOR SETAR - The Kedah state government has proposed the dissolution of the state assembly on June 28 in preparation for upcoming elections.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is scheduled to meet with the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, on June 25 to present the suggested dissolution date.

Sanusi hghlighted the importance of obtaining the Sultan's permission before officially announcing the dissolution of the Kedah State Assembly.

"If His Majesty approves the suggested date for the state government to dissolve the state assembly on June 28, it will be officially announced.

"However, if the Sultan does not grant permission, the dissolution may occur earlier or later as there are several days before the suggested date.

"Ultimately, it is at the discretion of His Majesty, and our suggestion will be officially announced once we obtain his permission," he told a press conference after the handover ceremony of tents, tables, and chairs to the Village Heads Council (MKK) under the 2023 Community Welfare Programme at Wisma Darul Aman on Thursday.

Sanusi further clarified that while the dissolution of each state assembly facing elections does not need to coincide, what matters is that the voting takes place simultaneously.

"The decision to dissolve the state assembly is up to each respective state, whether they choose to do it simultaneously or not. The voting dates will be determined by the Election Commission (EC), as that is their responsibility, not ours," he explained.

He added that the EC will set the voting date within 60 days after all six states have dissolved their respective state assemblies.

"Each state has a different maturity period. For example, Kelantan will dissolve its state assembly on June 26, Penang on August 1, and Kedah on July 4. Within 60 days, the EC must schedule the naming of candidates, early voting, postal votes, and regular votes," Sanusi added.
