Canada, M'sia embrace diversity and multiculturalism together - Canadian envoy

KUALA LUMPUR - Canada and Malaysia have numerous shared values, particularly in their mutual embrace of the power of diversity and multiculturalism, says Canadian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Wayne Robson.

Robson, in his opening speech during the Canadian Multiculturalism Day Reception held here Wednesday, said just like Canada, Malaysia understands the importance of fostering inclusivity, respect, and understanding among its diverse communities.

"It is through the recognition and celebration of our differences that we forge a stronger bond, promoting social harmony and a shared sense of belonging.

"The values of multiculturalism are deeply ingrained in both Canada and Malaysia, serving as a cornerstone for a vibrant and inclusive society,” he said in his speech.

His speech text was read by the Canadian High Commission’s Political Counsellor Robert Bissett.

Commenting further, the high commissioner said Malaysia is a country known for its rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions and highlighted that Malaysian society stands as a testament to the strength and unity that arises from embracing multiculturalism.

In 1971, Canada became one of the first countries to adopt an official multiculturalism policy.

A fundamental principle of that policy is that all citizens are equal and have the freedom to maintain and share their identity and cultural heritage with others.

On another note, Robson said for the last 50 years, Canada through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) has been supporting local projects around the globe in an effort to tackle issues concerning gender equality, women empowerment, democracy, the rule of law and human rights for all, and to ensure that no one was left behind by international development efforts.

He said over the past 10 years, the High Commission of Canada in Malaysia has supported about 60 projects which amounted to over 1.2 million Canadian dollars in funding. - BERNAMA
