JOHOR BAHRU - A man inflicted self-harm by slitting his throat and stabbing himself in the abdomen with a knife near a restaurant in Taman Suria on Thursday night.

In the 10.53pm incident, South Johor Bahru district police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the incident involved a 32-year-old man who is believed to be suffering from a mental health issue.

"The police were alerted to a 52-second video of the incident that went viral on social media.

"The individual has since been referred to a psychiatric doctor at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) for further treatment," he said in a statement today.

In the viral video, the man can be seen in a weakened state, pulling out his intestines, and lying on the side of the road.

Raub further disclosed that both police investigation and examination by the HSA doctor indicated that the man's actions were a result of his unstable mental state.

He also urged the public to report any information regarding criminal activities to the South Johor Bahru Police Headquarters Hotline at 07-2182323.
