NEW DELHI, India - The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday sounded a Red Alert, signalling extremely heavy rains, in parts of India's western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra over the next two days.

Several places in Maharashtra and Gujarat are already witnessing floods and other rain-related incidents, including landslides. As many as 22 bodies have been recovered so far from Maharashtra's Raigad district after a landslide struck a village on Wednesday night, and nearly 100 people are still missing.

Severe floods, incessant rains and rains-related incidents were also reported from the financial capital Mumbai and various other states, including Telangana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and some northeastern states.

"The damage in the state has crossed 50 billion Indian rupees (609 million U.S. dollars). Rain has stopped in some places but landslides are still occurring due to earlier rains," Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi told reporters. - XINHUA
