Jais confirms premises selling chicken without halal certificate

SHAH ALAM - The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has confirmed that the chicken sold at a supermarket in Bukit Changgang, Banting, did not have a valid halal certificate.
Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the department's Halal Enforcement Division and the Kuala Langat Municipal Council had inspected the premises on Thursday.
Inspections found that the premises did not hold a valid Malaysian Halal Certification Certificate (SPHM).
Mohd Shahzihan said the investigation was done under the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of 'Halal') Order 2011. If found guilty, they can be fined up to RM200,000 and imprisoned for not more than three years or both.
He added that Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) provided nine halal certification schemes, which included food and beverage products, food premises, and cosmetics.
SPHM applications, Mohd Shahzihan said, can be made through the website www.halal.gov.my.
He said the public is urged to practice caution when buying daily necessities by prioritising halal-certified products.
Halal products and premises can be verified directly through Jakim's portal: www.halal.gov.my.
The public can also report any misuse of the halal status to the Jais Halal Enforcement Section at 03-5514 3726/3760 or by calling the hotline at 011-5582 0212.
Previously, an incident on the sale of chicken drumsticks at a supermarket that did not have a halal certificate in Bukit Changgang, Banting went viral.
