BAYAN LEPAS - Penang Pas on Saturday admitted that the party's machinery had been sabotaged following the announcement of Gerakan President Datuk Dominic Lau as the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Bayan Lepas state legislative assembly seat.

Commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusof said the leadership is working to maintain peace during the state election campaign.

He mentioned that certain groups were unhappy with the decision to give the traditional Pas seat to Dominic, which has caused controversy.

"Of course, they are angry; there has been a mistake, and the sabotage is happening throughout the state polls process.

"In fact, Lau's selection has already been decided by the central PN Leadership Council even though we have tried to ask for a Pas candidate to contest for the Bayan Lepas seat," he said after the nomination process at the Mara Skills Institute (IKM) Tasek Gelugor today.

Fauzi, who is also a Sungai Dua state assembly candidate, said Pas is not inclined to make matters worse.

Meanwhile, checks on the Pas Bayan Lepas operations room in Teluk Kumbar were deserted with no supporters.

The conflict over candidates in the area began to arise after Pas Bayan Lepas was said to have objected to Lau's candidacy to run for the Malay majority seat.

Pas leaders and members of Pas Bayan Lepas are assisting their candidate, Mohamad Shukor Zakaria, who is currently running for the Pulau Betong state seat.

Penang Pas Liaison Board Secretary Iszuree Ibrahim said he is also campaigning to help Mohamad Shukor to win the seat.

He declined to comment further when asked about the absence of Pas supporters to support Lau at the nomination centre at Dewan Bukit Belah, Teluk Kumbar today.

According to Iszuree, he cannot issue any statement on the matter for now.

In a reply on the WhatsApp application, Iszuree believed that the absence of the Pas supporters could be attributed to their discontent with Lau's decision to run for the seat.
