KOTA BHARU - The appointment of contractors for Phase Two and Phase Three of the Sungai Golok Integrated River Basin Development (PLSB) project is expected to be made this November, said Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

He said Phase Two and Phase Three of the PLSB project were the government’s long-term plan to build flood protection infrastructure for the Golok River basin area.

"Phase Two of the PLSB project will focus on areas along Sungai Golok, particularly Rantau Panjang and settlement areas on the left side of Sungai Lanchang Lemal.

"Meanwhile, Phase Three of the project will complete the entire flood mitigation system for the Sungai Golok basin,” he said in a statement today.

Nik Nazmi said that overall, the implementation of Phases One, Two, and Three of the Sungai Golok PLSB project Phase involved an allocation amounting to over RM2 billion and was expected to be able to protect 31,000 residents as well as an area of 66,000 hectares from flooding.

He said Phase One of the Sungai Golok PLSB project, which involved an allocation of RM656 million and was currently under construction, was expected to be fully completed on Aug 13.

"Phase One of the project covers four main scopes, namely the construction of the Sungai Golok flood bund, involving about a stretch of 26.2 km; the Sungai Lanchang Lemal flood bund (19.84 km); the Kuala Jambu Outlet Gate; and the Sungai Mentua bund.

"This project is expected to reduce the risk of flooding with the construction of flood mitigation infrastructure, in addition to keeping the navigation channel at the Sungai Golok estuary at least three-metre deep to allow boats to pass through it and protect it from coastal flooding,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi said the Federal Government has taken short-term proactive measures to solve flood woes in Kampung Tersang, Rantau Panjang with the construction of river outlets.
