SHAH ALAM - Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director today highlights the importance of taking necessary precautions and practicing safety measures when preventing gas explosions at home.

Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said regular inspections of gas cylinders, timely maintenance, and swift action in case of leaks needed to be done to prevent potential disasters.

"Gas leaks can result from various factors, including damaged gas hoses caused by rodent bites, wear and tear, or prolonged folding.

"Additionally, improper installation of gas regulators or damage to regulators themselves can also contribute to gas leaks.

"Early detection is essential, and signs of a gas leak may include a hissing sound from the regulator or the distinctive smell of gas," Wan Razali told Sinar Daily.

To minimize the risk of gas-related incidents, Wan Razali provided essential tips to prevent gas leaks.

Firstly, he emphasised the importance of thorough inspection before using a gas cylinder.

"Individuals should pay close attention to the rubber seal inside the cylinder's head after removing the cap, as this seal is critical in preventing leaks when the gas regulator is inserted," he said.

Secondly, Wan Razali said regular replacement of gas hoses and clips was crucial for safety.

He recommends changing gas hoses and clips every two years and gas regulators every five years.

This regular maintenance, he said, ensures optimum performance and reduces the risk of leaks.

Moreover, individuals were advised to be cautious when using pots or cooking utensils to avoid spills, particularly near gas burners.

Overflowing soups or broths, Wan Razali said, could enter the gas burner and obstruct the flame, significantly increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Proper kitchen or cooking area ventilation was another essential aspect of gas leak prevention.

He also emphasised the importance of ensuring good ventilation to prevent gas buildup, which further enhances safety.

Lastly, individuals should practice mindful storage of gas regulators. Placing heavy objects, such as books, on the gas regulator when the gas is not in use is discouraged, as this practice can cause damage and increase the risk of gas leaks.

"By following these preventive measures, individuals can play an active role in safeguarding against gas leaks and contribute to a safer environment for themselves and others.

"I urge the public to prioritize gas leak prevention and adopt responsible practices to enhance overall safety in homes and commercial spaces.
