DAP respects Azan prayers, pauses Mega event
JELUTONG - DAP once again showed its respect for other religions by pausing its mega event for Azan prayers.
The event, which was attended by hundreds of Chinese voters, went into silence for a few minutes to respect the Azan prayers being conducted by a nearby mosque.
DAP's Jagdeep Singh Deo, who was delivering his speech, stopped immediately when he heard the Azan.
"It's Azan now, so I'll stop my speech," he said.
The event was also attended by other prominent leaders, including DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, Sungai Pinang candidate Siew Khim, and Amanah Wanita deputy chief Aida Yusof Rawa.
Penang, which is governed by the DAP, is often portrayed as being "racist."
However, the event on today showed that the party and its supporters are respectful of other religions.
A local resident Tan Liew Chin, 58, said that his family has always been taught to respect Azan prayers.
"I've been living here for 58 years, and we've never once disrespected the Malays,"
"We keep silent during their prayers," he told Sinar Daily.
Kwan Yee Hui, 63, echoed Tan's sentiments.
"The people of Penang have always respected the Malay prayers time.
"I'm not sure why we're portrayed as racist here," she said.
