SHAH ALAM - Leaders must be wise and truthful when governing as these aspects are the pillars of a good leadership.

Former Tabung Haji Board CEO Datuk Dr Nik Mohd Hasyudeen Yusoff said both aspects were interrelated and could become a guideline for the public to choose a leader.

“The two could not be separated, that’s why if there were leaders who were only wise and did not have any trust, he would fail to perform his duties as a leader.

“However, if the person is only truthful but unwise, he would also be unable to perform his duties and responsibilities,” he said in an exclusive ‘Soalan Panas’ interview discussing issues related to integrity and corruption aired on Rasuah Busters and Sinar Harian’s Facebook pages on Monday.

Nik Mohd Hasyudeen said the public must gather their thoughts when making a decision to choose a leader

“We must use our minds to evaluate and at the same time we must look at the religious guidelines.

“So, leaders are not only those who can talk about good things but also those who are able to implement those things,” he said.

Touching on the claims that ‘corruption was just another business strategy’ Nik Mohd Hasyudeen said he did not agree with such statements.

“That is simply a mistake. It is a crime and those who do so should not be given any sympathy.

“Because it involves us all. I want to explain to the public that corruption affects us all despite feeling as if it happens on a different stage,” he said.

He gave the example of the construction of a school where the management involved in developing it was involved in corruption, the public would still need to bear the losses.

“If a school was valued at RM10 million, corruption can occur not only amongst those wanting the project, but those providing the project.

“Usually when a corruption for a school developmet occurs, the price would be raised from RM12 million to RM15 million. Who would be paying the RM15 million? The ones paying for it would us taxpayers," he said
