NEW DELHI - Russia on Monday congratulated Pakistan on its 76th Independence Day, saying the South Asian country plays an important role in regional and international affairs.

"Pakistan has been playing an increasingly significant role in regional and international affairs in recent years. Pakistanis are rightly proud of their achievements in the field of socioeconomic development, ancient history and cultural heritage of their country," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Today, Russia-Pakistan ties are rapidly developing. Amid the turbulent international situation, our countries continue to maintain a regular political dialogue and carry out constructive cooperation within international organisations, primarily the UN and SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation). Furthermore, the trade and economic cooperation has significant potential," it said.

Russia, traditionally close to India, has improved its relations with Pakistan in recent years.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin in a message to his counterpart Arif Alvi underlined "positive momentum" in bilateral relations.

"Moscow and Islamabad have been proactive in working together on the counterterrorism agenda and Afghanistan policy, as well as in addressing other urgent international issues. I am certain that by working together we will succeed in further expanding the multifaceted ties between Russia and Pakistan for the benefit of our nations and for stronger regional stability and security," Putin said.

As Pakistan battles its economic and political turmoil and prepares to hold new general elections this year, a caretaker prime minister was sworn in on Monday.

Alvi administered the oath of office to Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the head of his small Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), at a ceremony in Islamabad. - BERNAMA
