IPOH - The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) hopes that the country’s top sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi will continue to work hard to improve his performances despite failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim said the ministry would continue to give its support to ensure the Teluk Intan-born athlete gets the best training in the United States.

"We do give him attention and are in touch with him regularly.

"Azeem has also been adopted as a sports icon for the ministry’s programmes, and this is part of our support for him,” he told reporters after launching the state-level Fit Malaysia programme here today.

In the men’s 100m first round early this morning, Muhammad Azeem clocked 10.26 sec to finish seventh out of eight runners in heat four.

Muhammad Azeem, who was making his debut in the world meet, holds the national 100m record of 10.09s, which he set at the Under-20 World Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia, in August last year.

On the Perak-level Fit Malaysia programme, Adam Adli said more than 9,000 people participated in various activities like the 10KM and 35KM fun rides, 5KM and 10KM fun runs, 3KM fun walk, aerobics and tug-of-war events.

"It is aimed at turning sports into part of the culture for society through the practice of active and healthy lifestyles in line with the aspiration of the Malaysia Madani framework,” he said - BERNAMA
