JOHOR BAHRU - The Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for Simpang Jeram state seat, Dr Mazri Yahya says his decision to run in the by-election is not driven by wealth or power.

The Pas Pusat Committee Member said that he agreed to contest after his party encouraged him to run again, additionally it is a way to serve the Simpang Jeram community.

"I have no intention of contesting in the by-election but carrying out duties as a Pas central committee member, in addition to following the instructions of the party leadership to contest in Simpang Jeram.

"Initially, I had mixed feelings but due to my sense of responsibility to the party, I feel it is necessary (to compete). God willing, I will try to complete this duty.

"Hopefully the community in Simpang Jeram can accept me while I try to contribute my best to the community of Simpang Jeram," he said when met by reporters.

Earlier, PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced Mazri as a candidate for the Simpang Jeram state seat and Zulkifli Jaafar as a candidate for the Pulai parliament seat.

The announcement was made at the Pulai PN Main Operations Room, Kempas here on Thursday, which was also attended by PN Information chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Gerakan President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau and Pas Johor Commissioner Abdullah Hussin.
