SIPITANG - An elderly man was found dead after he was believed to have been trapped in a fire at his home in Kampung Melalia, near here on Friday night.

In the incident, the body of Wong Fook On, 66, was found by the Fire and Rescue Department team in the kitchen of his house.

Sipitang Fire and Rescue Station chief Calvin Joe Jeafery said the department received a distress call on the incident at 7.39pm.

He said a total of 11 firemen were deployed to the scene of the incident which is 13 kilometres away from Sipitang fire station.

"The fire engulfed a non-permanent house and a Proton Iswara car which was 100 per cent destroyed.

"Fire extinguishing operation was carried out immediately and the fire was successfully controlled at 8.05 pm," he said when contacted by Sinar.

Further checks revealed a victim who was killed in the fire.

"Our team found the body of a man in the kitchen.

"The victim who lives alone is believed to be trapped in the incident," he said.

Calvin added the victim's body was then handed over to the police for further action.

"The operation ended at 10.36pm after an inspection was carried out and there was no other threat at the scene," he said.
